Industry: e-commerce and D2C

UGC for online shops and D2C brandsads you can test

If you sell online, you constantly need new videos for ads, product pages and marketplaces. We produce UGC with several hooks and formats per video, so you can test which variant sells and follow up before performance drops.

Who this page is for

This page is for businesses that sell their products mainly online to consumers.

This includes online shops on Shopify, Shopware or WooCommerce, D2C brands (direct to consumer, meaning brands that sell directly to consumers without intermediaries), sellers on marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay or Otto, subscription box providers and founders bringing their first product to market. Typical product ranges are fashion and accessories, household and kitchen, sports and leisure, pet supplies, electronics accessories and home furnishings.

Typical goals in e-commerce

In e-commerce, UGC matters most where a purchase decision is made: in the ad, on the product page and in the marketplace listing.

UGC stands for user generated content, meaning videos and photos in the style of real customers. In ads on Meta and TikTok such videos feel less like advertising and fit the feed. On the product page they show size, material and handling in a way a studio photo does not. Many sellers also want to set realistic expectations so that fewer products are returned.

The most important goal is usually a predictable supply of ad material. If you only run two or three videos, you soon no longer know whether the product or the video is the problem.

Creative fatigue, variants and hooks

Creative fatigue means that an ad loses effect because your audience has seen it too often.

The cost per purchase then rises, even though nothing about the product has changed. The most effective remedy is regular new variants. The fastest way is the hook, the first two to three seconds of a video, which decide whether someone keeps watching. That is why we shoot several openings per video while the main part stays the same.

In the Ads package you get 5 videos with 3 hooks each, so 15 testable variants, in two aspect ratios. If you run ads permanently, the subscription is the better choice: 10 new videos per month with 3 hooks each and raw footage, so your team or your agency can also build its own edits.

Suitable formats and services

These are the formats we use most often for online shops and brands.

Product demo and unboxing

A person unpacks the product, shows what is in the box and how it is handled and names the key features. Suitable for product pages and ads.

Problem and solution

The video starts with an everyday problem of your audience and shows how your product solves it. This format works especially well for ads.

Testimonial

A creator describes their own experience with the product on camera. It is based on a script that reproduces your statements correctly.

Product and lifestyle photos

Photos for shop, marketplace and channels, cut out or in use. Photo packages start at €129 net for 5 images.

Have your ads run for you

We manage your campaigns on Meta and TikTok with material from our own production. You pay the ad budget directly to the platform.

Online shop starter

If you do not have your own shop yet, we build a starter shop with up to 50 products and payment integration from €4,900 net.

Marketplaces like Amazon and your own shop

Marketplaces have their own requirements for images and videos, so we plan marketplace material separately from ad material.

Amazon, for example, requires the main image to show the product cut out against a pure white background, and videos in listings are tied to certain account types. Other marketplaces have their own rules on text in images, logos and references to other sales channels. Tell us in the brief where the material will run, and we align edit, format and content with it.

For your own shop, short videos directly on the product page that show size, material and use make sense. The same raw footage can often be used for ads and channels too, if the usage rights cover it.

Process with product shipping

This is how a project runs when we shoot with your product.

  1. 01

    Brief

You name the product, audience, platforms and the statements that should be included. You can find a template in our guide to the UGC brief.

  2. 02

    Script and creators

In the Ads package we write the concept and script, and you approve them. Then we choose suitable creators from our group of around 20 creators and on-camera talent.

  3. 03

    Product shipping

You send the product to our studio in Borken and bear the shipping costs. Whether samples should be returned is set out in the order beforehand.

  4. 04

    Shoot and edit

We deliver a single video 10 working days after receiving the product or after the shoot date. For a 40 percent surcharge, express delivery takes 72 hours.

  5. 05

    Revision and delivery

You review the videos and receive the revisions included in the package. Then we deliver the finished files with the agreed usage rights.

What to consider legally

These points generally apply to UGC in online retail. They do not replace legal advice.

  • Usage rights to match the use: a video that may be posted organically may not automatically run as an ad. Check whether advertising and its duration are included in the package.
  • Statements about the product must be true and verifiable. Misleading advertising is prohibited under § 5 UWG (German Act against Unfair Competition), even if it comes in a creator's casual tone.
  • A UGC video is advertising. Do not present it as an independent customer review, for example in the review section of your shop.
  • If a video runs through a creator's account, for example as a Spark Ad or via whitelisting, it must be labelled as advertising, for example with the paid partnership label.
  • Music in the video needs a licence for use in advertising. Music that is freely available in an app for private posts usually does not cover ads.

Common mistakes

  • Running only one or two videos and deciding after a week that UGC does not work.
  • Leaving the hook to chance, even though the first seconds decide the cost of the ad.
  • Buying material for ads without suitable advertising rights and later paying a lot to license it retroactively.
  • Running the same video for months until the cost per purchase rises noticeably.
  • Serving marketplace and ads with the same edit, even though the requirements differ.
  • Shipping the product too late and thereby delaying the campaign launch.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many UGC videos do I need for ads?

For testing, you should run several videos with different hooks at the same time so you can compare them. The FNLY Social Ads package delivers 5 videos with 3 hooks each, so 15 variants. If you run ads permanently, you need a constant supply, and that is what the subscription with 10 videos per month is for.

What is creative fatigue?

Creative fatigue means that an ad loses effect because the audience has seen it too often. The cost per purchase then rises, even though nothing about the product has changed. New hooks and variants are the usual remedy.

Do I have to ship my product?

Yes, for shoots with your product you send it to our studio in Borken and bear the shipping costs. Whether the samples should be returned is set out in the order beforehand.

How quickly do I get the videos?

FNLY Social delivers a single video 10 working days after receiving the product or after the shoot date. For a 40 percent surcharge, express delivery in 72 hours is possible. For larger packages we state the date in the quote.

Can I also use the videos on Amazon?

That depends on the usage rights and the marketplace's requirements. Tell us in the brief where the material will run, and we cut a suitable version.

What are Spark Ads and whitelisting?

With Spark Ads on TikTok and whitelisting on Meta, your ad runs through the creator's account instead of your brand account. This often looks more natural in the feed. At FNLY Social the permission costs €120 per platform and campaign for up to 3 months.

Do you also run the ads for us?

Yes, we offer ad management on Meta and TikTok as a separate service. You pay the ad budget directly to the platform, separately from our fee.
