Guide: comparison

UGC or influencer marketing? What you get with each

Both approaches work with people on camera, yet you buy something different in each case. This article compares UGC and influencer marketing and shows when each one fits.

In short

With UGC you buy content that you use on your own channels and in your ads, and the reach comes from your ad budget. With influencer marketing you pay for the reach and trust of a person who shows your product to their own audience. Many companies combine both.

UGC and influencer marketing compared

The key difference is whose reach is used.

When UGC fits better

UGC fits if you already run ads or plan to, and need new videos for them on an ongoing basis.

You keep control over where and how long a video runs and can test several variants against each other. For product pages in your store and for your own channels, UGC is also the obvious choice, because the rights are granted for this use from the start.

When influencer marketing fits better

Influencer marketing fits if your brand is still unknown to a specific audience and you want to use the trust of a person this audience follows.

This applies especially to product launches and to areas such as beauty, fashion, food or sports, where recommendations carry a lot of weight. It is important to clarify beforehand whether you may also use the content yourself later, for example as a Partnership Ad.

Combining both

In practice the two approaches complement each other: influencers create attention, and UGC supplies the material you use to build on that attention in ads and on your channels.

An in-between form is whitelisting and Partnership Ads, where an ad is delivered under the creator's name. This requires a separate agreement and labelling as advertising.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between UGC and influencer marketing?

With UGC you buy content for your own channels and ads. With influencer marketing you pay for a person to show your product to their own audience.

Is UGC cheaper than influencer marketing?

Per piece of content usually yes, because with UGC you do not pay for reach. In return, UGC generally needs an ad budget so the videos are seen.

Can I use an influencer's post for my ads?

Only if this is agreed in the contract. Without an agreement, generally only the use needed for the agreed post applies (§ 31(5) UrhG, German Copyright Act).

Does UGC have to be labelled as advertising?

If the video runs as an ad from your company account, it is generally already recognizable as advertising. If a creator posts the video on her own account for payment, she must label it.

Does FNLY Social also offer influencer marketing?

Influencer collaborations and product placements are handled by the sister brand FNLY Agency. FNLY Social focuses on UGC, design and social media management.

What are Partnership Ads?

Partnership Ads are ads on Instagram and Facebook that appear jointly under the name of a creator and your brand. They combine the effect of a creator post with the control of an ad.

Which fits a small business better?

If you run ads or post on your own channels, UGC is usually the more predictable start. Influencer marketing pays off more when a clearly defined audience follows a specific person.
