Guide: comparison

UGC vs influencer marketingWhat you get with each

Both approaches put people on camera, yet you buy something different each time. This article sets UGC and influencer marketing side by side and shows when each one fits.

Short answer

With UGC you buy content that you run on your own channels and in your own ads, and the reach comes from your ad budget. With influencer marketing you pay for a person's reach and the trust of their audience. Under FTC rules, a creator who posts paid content on their own account must disclose the relationship, while your own ads carry the platform's ad label. Many brands combine both.

When UGC fits better

UGC fits when you already run ads, or plan to, and need new videos on a regular basis.

You control where and how long a video runs, and you can test several variations against each other. UGC is also the natural choice for product pages and your own channels, because the rights are licensed for that use from the start.

When influencer marketing fits better

Influencer marketing fits when your brand is still unknown to a specific audience and you want the trust of a person that audience follows.

That applies especially to product launches and to categories such as beauty, fashion, food and fitness, where recommendations carry a lot of weight. Agree up front whether you may reuse the content later yourself, for example as a Partnership Ad.

Combining both

In practice the two complement each other: influencers create attention, and UGC supplies the material you use to keep that attention going in ads and on your channels.

A middle ground is whitelisting, Partnership Ads on Instagram and Facebook and Spark Ads on TikTok, where an ad runs under the creator's name. These need a separate agreement, and the FTC expects the paid relationship to be disclosed. The FTC also notes that a platform's built-in disclosure tool may not be enough on its own.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between UGC and influencer marketing?

With UGC you buy content for your own channels and ads. With influencer marketing you pay a person to show your product to their own audience.

Is UGC cheaper than influencer marketing?

Per piece of content, usually yes, because you do not pay for reach. In exchange, UGC usually needs an ad budget so that people see the videos.

Can I use an influencer's post in my ads?

Only if your contract says so. Without an agreement, you usually only have the right to the post that was agreed, so settle paid usage, term and platforms in writing up front.

Does UGC need an FTC disclosure?

When the video runs as an ad from your brand account, the platform's ad label marks it as advertising. When a creator posts the paid video on their own account, the creator must disclose the relationship clearly, for example with "#ad" at the start of the caption.

Does FNLY Social offer influencer marketing in the US?

No. In the US, FNLY Social focuses on UGC, product photos, design and social media management. We can supply UGC that complements influencer campaigns you run elsewhere.

What are Partnership Ads?

Partnership Ads are ads on Instagram and Facebook that show both the creator's name and your brand. They combine the feel of a creator post with the targeting of an ad, and the creator has to approve the partnership.

Which fits a small business better?

If you run ads or post on your own channels, UGC is usually the more predictable start. Influencer marketing pays off more when a clearly defined audience follows one specific person.
